Overview
The ScanRobot 2.0 MDS is an automatic book scanner from the Austrian company TREVENTUS Mechatronics (Vienna) for mass digitization of books. The book rests in a wooden V-shaped cradle opened to only 60° (the angle is steplessly adjustable up to 100°), and the spread is captured by a patented prism with a single central capture unit. As a result, pages are scanned without distortion, with constant focus and an optical resolution of 400 dpi, regardless of the size and thickness of the book and the quality of the paper. According to the manufacturer, ScanRobot is in use in more than 60 countries worldwide.
Pages are turned without contact by an adjustable air flow, with no clamps, mechanical grippers, or glass plate; the system monitors the process and checks for double sheets. In automatic mode, throughput reaches 2,500 pages per hour; there is also a semiautomatic (weightless) mode for scanning without pressure on the book. The LED lighting operates in a closed system, is independent of ambient light, does not heat the book, and produces no IR or UV emission. The package includes an A3 flatbed scanner for covers, folded maps, and loose sheets, a PC workstation with an EIZO 24″ monitor, and ScanGate RT software with real-time image processing.
